Carefully mapped out a stone circle for months, and some hikers moved the markers for a photo. Now my data's useless.

Hikers messing with markers is frustrating. But your data isn't useless. These sites evolve, and human interference is part of that story. You could document the change as part of your research.

My cousin did a bird survey for two years straight. Had his camera traps messed with three times. That kind of work is so fragile.

Reminds me of when a hiking group moved all the trail markers for a group selfie. Rangers had to post like five new signs about it.
