Dug up a 50 year old beer can in my backyard last week thought it was ancient pottery
So I was digging a hole for a new fence post in my yard in Denver last Saturday and hit something hard. I got all excited thinking it was maybe a arrowhead or some old tool from settlers or whatever. Turned out it was a rusty Coors can from like the 1970s, still had a little dried up beer inside. My neighbor came over and we had a good laugh about it, but now I'm wondering if I should start a collection of old trash or actually dig deeper to see if there's real stuff underneath. Anyone else find something funny that looked ancient but was just junk?

Jump right in and dig deeper for sure. I live in an old mining town in Colorado and people find all sorts of weird stuff just a few feet down. Last summer my uncle dug up a old horseshoe and a glass bottle from the 1800s in his backyard, but it took a half dozen tries to get past the rusty cans and broken toys from the 70s. You might hit a trash pit from when the house was built, which could have some cool old bottles or even a lost coin. Plus the beer can itself is kinda cool if you clean it up and set it on a shelf. No harm in poking around a little more, just don't expect everything to be a buried treasure.

Hang in there, I've definitely been there before. It's frustrating to dig up something that looks cool at first and then realize it's just old trash from a few decades ago. Keep at it though, you never know what else might be hiding just a little deeper down.
