Found a coin in a plowed field in Yorkshire that turned out to be 300 years younger than I guessed
Went out with my detector near a village called Cawood back in April and dug up a silver coin about 6 inches down. I was sure it was Tudor era, so I posted it in a group and a fellow there set me straight. It was actually a 1697 William III shilling, which is way later than I figured. Turns out I was dating it by the portrait style, not the mint marks, and I did not know to check the edge lettering. What do you all use to pin down a date before you send photos off to a museum?
