I tried a standard trowel versus a Marshalltown pointing trowel on a Roman floor mosaic in York and the difference was huge.
The standard one kept chipping the tiny tesserae, but the pointing trowel's smaller, sharper edge let me clean the joints without damage. It saved about two days of careful work on just one square meter. Has anyone else found a specific tool that made a tricky excavation task way easier?

Honestly thought all trowels were basically the same until now.

Oh man, I had that exact same thought last year! I was using a cheap one for a patio project and it was a total fight. Switched to a nicer one with a better handle shape, and wow, what a difference. It just felt right in my hand and spread so much smoother. How did you figure out there was a difference?

Guess it takes using a truly awful one to appreciate a good tool. Like how bad coffee makes you notice the decent stuff?
