My best field day ever was finding a Roman coin hoard in a muddy field

Found 127 bronze coins from the 3rd century AD in one afternoon last August after a week of rain made the soil just soft enough to pop them out.

Last summer changed my mind about all this. I used to think the best finds were the flashy gold or silver pieces you see in museums, but pulling 127 bronze coins out of the mud one by one was something special. There's a real thrill in knowing nobody has touched those things in over 1,700 years.

My own best field day was finding what I thought was a gold ring, only to realize it was a rusty bottle cap that had been in the ground for maybe a year. At least your coins actually have some history behind them, mine just proves I can't tell treasure from trash. Makes my best find sound a bit sad, but hey, at least I get a laugh out of it.
