Overheard a guy at the Denver archaeology society say most 'ancient tools' are just broken rocks

Has anyone else had a local archaeologist tell you something that just deflated a whole collection?

Oh honey, just ask them if they've ever tried knapping a decent handaxe from a crappy piece of chert.

Chert's actually not that bad, it's the quartzite that's the real nightmare.
