Rental magnetometer saved my survey, $180 well spent

I was doing a field walk near a Roman site in the Cotswolds and kept finding nothing but scrap metal. Renting a magnetometer for the weekend from a local uni equipment pool cost me $180 and it paid off fast. Found a clear ditch line and what looked like a kiln in under 3 hours. If I'd bought one outright I'd have been out over $2k and probably never used it again. Has anyone else tried renting survey gear instead of buying? I'm curious if the cheaper rental units are worth it for small sites.
