Spent 4 months trying to date a pottery shard that didn't fit any known style

I found this weird piece of pottery last spring during a dig near the river. It had this strange zigzag pattern that didn't match any regional style I could find in the books or online. I kept thinking it was maybe from a different time period or trade route. After talking to a ceramics specialist at the state museum, she told me it was probably a local imitation of a fancier style from 200 miles away. Turns out it was from around 1200 AD, not the 1500s like I thought. Has anyone else run into a piece that just refused to line up with what you expected?

Yeah, that's just how stuff works sometimes.

@the_riley hit it. This stuff happens with people too, not just old pots.
