The dig in Pompeii last fall changed my mind about preservation methods

I used to think the only right way to handle a site was to leave everything exactly where it was found. Then I spent 2 weeks volunteering near the House of the Faun and watched a team try to stabilize a fresco that was falling apart because they refused to move it. The conservator finally had to take a chunk off the wall to save it. Now I think sometimes you have to move things to protect them. Anyone else seen a site where waiting did more harm than good?
