Had the worst week of my life last month when my basement flooded

We got 8 inches of rain in three days here in St. Louis and my sump pump gave out. The water was up to my ankles in the finished part of the basement and ruined my old couch and a TV. Took me two full days with a wet vac to get it all out and now I'm looking at $3,000 for new carpet. Has anyone else dealt with a surprise flood like this and found a good way to prevent it happening again?

Get a backup sump pump with a battery system installed ASAP. Honestly, water damage is a nightmare and that pump failure is brutal. Worth every penny to not go through that again.

Totally agree with @phoenix_campbell88 on that. "Worth every penny" is right. I went through a basement flood once after a storm knocked out power for hours, and the cleanup cost way more than a backup system would have. Plus having that extra peace of mind when it rains heavy just makes it all worth it. You can get a decent battery backup setup for a few hundred bucks installed, and it will save you from having to rip out drywall and carpet later.
