I tried to teach my nephew to drive stick in a Walmart parking lot in Dayton last Saturday and it went about how you'd expect
So my sister asked me to teach her 16 year old son how to drive a manual since I'm the only one in the family who still owns one, a 2004 Civic with 217,000 miles on it. We went to the far end of the Walmart lot on Needmore Road in Dayton around 7am last Saturday because it's always empty back there. I spent 20 minutes explaining the clutch and he stalled it 9 times before we even moved 10 feet. At one point a security guard rolled up and just watched us for like 5 minutes without saying anything, which was honestly so awkward. The kid finally got it rolling in first gear and immediately panicked and hit the brake so hard we both almost ate the dashboard. He did eventually make it around the whole lot twice without stalling, which felt like a huge win. Now I'm wondering if I should've started him on something easier, or if jumping straight into a manual was a dumb idea. Did anyone else learn to drive stick this way, or did you have a better method that didn't involve nearly getting whiplash?
