My knit blanket fell apart because I didn't check the yarn first

I picked up some cheap yarn for a big blanket project. After one gentle wash, it started pilling and shedding fibers all over my couch. Now the blanket looks old and messy. Always test a small swatch with your yarn before diving in. It could save you a lot of time and frustration.

Ever buy fabric without pre-washing it first? I grabbed some cheap cotton for kitchen towels. One hot wash and they shrank to the size of washcloths. Now I have a stack of tiny, useless rags. I always pre-wash my fabric now. It saves so much trouble later.

Wait, shrank to washcloth size... that's brutal. Now I'm paranoid about my own fabric stash.

That pilling and shedding after one wash is such a letdown. My friend spent weeks knitting a scarf with bargain bin yarn, and it basically dissolved in the cold cycle. She had to pick fuzz balls off all her dark clothes for months. @ryanperez, your fabric stash fears make total sense now. I guess a quick test really can save you from a huge mess.
