Paid $80 for a 'premium' forum guide that was just a Google Doc of links
It was a PDF with about 20 links to free articles and a few obvious tips. Felt pretty dumb after that. Anyone know a good place for actual, solid advice on starting a forum?

Check the forum rules page for their own guides first...

Oof, that "Google Doc of links" thing is the worst. Been there. @the_tara is right to check the rules page, that's a solid first step. Honestly, the best advice I ever got was from just reading a forum you like for a week before you post. You see how people talk, what gets good replies, what gets ignored. Then, make your first post a real question, not just "hi". Like, instead of "how do I start a forum", try "I'm setting up a forum for vintage radios, any tips on the best simple software for that?". Way better results.
