Serious question, why does everyone answer "how are you" with "good" when they mean exhausted?

My buddy Pete did this thing where he started answering with the truth for a week. First day his boss asked how he was doing and he said "running on four hours of sleep and my back hurts" and the guy just stared at him. By Thursday people were asking if he was okay and one lady brought him soup. He went back to "good" after that. The whole thing is just a handshake, nobody actually wants the real answer.
