Showerthought: That one guy at the community garden who told me to stop overwatering my tomatoes

I was at the community garden in Portland last June, just watering my plants like I always did. This older dude named Carlos walks over and says 'you're drowning them, stop for a week.' I thought he was full of it since I'd been watering daily for months. But after 7 days of nothing, my tomatoes actually grew bigger and the leaves stopped yellowing. He told me roots need to search for water, not just sit in it. Has anyone else had a random stranger fix a problem you didn't even know you had?
