That time a farmer I met in Nebraska told me I was planting my tomatoes too deep
He said bury them up to the first leaves for stronger roots, but I did that and every single stem rotted out within 2 weeks. Has anyone else had this backfire or was it just bad luck with my soil?

Oh man, that sucks. I've had that rot problem too.

Started digging into this after my second batch of tomatoes rotted out too. Turns out, if your soil holds water like clay does, burying stems that deep is basically asking for rot. I switched to raised beds with sand mixed in and now my tomatoes are monsters. @lopez.brooke is right, it's a common problem. It makes me think about those life hacks people share that work in one setting but totally bomb elsewhere. Like, my cousin tried that "dry your jeans in the freezer" thing from the internet, and they just came out cold and damp. Same with planting advice, you gotta match it to your specific dirt and weather.
