The wifi at the coffee shop made me rethink password sharing

I was sitting at a local spot in Austin last Tuesday and overheard two guys arguing about whether to give a stranger the wifi password. One said it's no big deal, the other said it's basically letting someone sit on your porch at night. I used to agree with the first guy, I mean what's the harm right? But then I thought about how my neighbor's open network got used for some sketchy downloads and suddenly the cops were at his door. It's not about being rude or gatekeeping, it's about not letting randoms onto a connection tied to your name. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather buy someone a drink than hand out the code. Has anyone else had a bad experience from being too generous with their network?
