Warning: a talk with my neighbor about his lawnmower changed my approach to asking for help

He said, 'I just tell them exactly what's broken and what I already tried, saves everyone time.' Has anyone else found a specific phrase that gets you better answers?

That neighbor is onto something. It's like when you call tech support and just say "my computer won't turn on" versus telling them the model, that the power light blinks once, and you already tried a different outlet. Giving the full story upfront stops the twenty questions. You see it at work too, where a vague "something's wrong with the report" email gets ignored, but a message listing the exact error code gets a fix in five minutes. People can help faster when they don't have to play detective first.

Sometimes you just need to vent without solving it though.

That article in Harvard Business Review says the same thing, and @riverg75 is right about it.
