Heard a lawyer at a Columbus courthouse say 'just put it in writing' and it stuck with me
I was waiting on a small claims thing and overheard an attorney tell his client that a $400 text thread beat her signed contract because the text came later. Now I screenshot everything and email myself a copy same day. Does that hold up, or am I just making myself feel better?
Screenshotting everything is smart but the email to yourself part is where it gets shaky. A screenshot by itself doesn't prove much because anyone can fake one, and a judge knows that. What actually helped that lady was the timing, the text came after the contract so it counted as a change to the deal, not because she saved it pretty. If you really want it to hold up, back up the actual phone, keep the original thread on the device, and don't delete anything. Same day emails are fine as a habit but they don't make the screenshot itself stronger than a bored lawyer with a photoshop claim.
