Warning: I signed a contract without reading the fine print and it cost me $800
About six months ago I needed a new roof for my house in Springfield. The contractor handed me a 10 page contract and I just skimmed it and signed. I figured it was standard stuff. Well a big storm came through and damaged some siding that wasn't part of the roof job. When I called them to fix it they pointed to a clause that said any additional work had to go through them at triple the normal rate. I ended up paying $800 for a repair that should have been maybe $250. The thing that tipped me off was when my neighbor got a quote from a different company for the same repair and it was way less. I went back and actually read the whole contract and there it was in section 7. Has anyone else gotten burned by not reading the fine print on home improvement contracts?

Triple rate clause is a classic red flag. Everybody skims those things, but $800 for a $250 job stings. At least now you know to read every page before signing next time. Solid warning for the rest of us.
