I was at the Grand Canyon last month and the Milky Way looked wrong

I was camping near the North Rim and took a long exposure shot of the night sky, but the core of the Milky Way seemed way more washed out and pink than in photos I've seen from the same spot. I used a 20-second exposure at f/2.8 on my camera. Has anyone else had this happen and know if it's a light pollution change or maybe my camera settings?

Washed out and pink" sounds like light pollution to me.

Yeah, that's a solid point from @elliotr39. The pinkish sky glow is a total giveaway for sodium vapor lights from older street lamps. It really does wash out the stars. Makes it tough to see much beyond the moon from my backyard anymore. It's one of those things you don't notice until it's gone, like how dark the night used to be.
