Just spent 3 hours trying to stack a single astro photo
I was out last week near a dark spot in Vermont and took like 40 shots of the Orion Nebula. Got home and spent three hours messing with stacking software because I was saving them as JPEGs instead of RAW files. Had to redo the whole thing and I felt like such a dummy. Anyone else ever waste a night because of a simple file format mistake?

Oh wow, I gotta jump in here lol. Johnny's great and all but "non negotiable" is a bit much tbh. DSLR and mirrorless shooters who shoot in JPEG fine mode can still get solid stacks if their exposure is dialed in and they're not pushing the data too hard. Raw definitely gives you way more room to stretch the histogram and fix gradients, but you won't get brick walled at the stacking stage with JPEGs as long as your subs are clean. The real non negotiable is not using something like a heavily compressed JPEG basic or webp lol.
