My neighbor's kid asked if the moon was a giant light bulb
I was setting up my telescope in the driveway last night when the little boy from next door came over. He pointed at the full moon and asked, 'Is that a giant light bulb someone forgot to turn off?' I laughed and tried to explain it was reflecting sunlight, but he just nodded like he got it. It made me think about how we see things before we know the science. Anyone have a good way to explain space stuff to really young kids?

Oh man, that's actually a really smart guess from a kid! It's like they're using what they know to figure out the world. Maybe just go with the light bulb thing for now and say it's a special kind that uses sun power.

Yeah exactly, kids connect dots in wild ways. Honestly the sun power line is perfect, it's true but keeps it simple for them. Way better than some long, confusing science talk they won't get yet. Let them figure out the details when they're older.

That little kid basically reverse engineered how light works without even knowing it lol. @blakeharris made a good point about rolling with the light bulb idea but theres a way cooler angle nobody brought up. The moon actually has really dark rock on it like charcoal colored but because its so bright against the black sky our brains just assume its glowing white. Your telescope probably showed him those dark patches called maria which are old lava flows. Kids dont need perfect science just the right amount of wonder to keep asking questions later.
