Solar filters had me skeptical until I burned my retinas... not really

I used to think cheap solar filters were fine until I saw a comparison of legit ones vs. knockoffs on a clear day in June. The knockoff let through way more IR light, which convinced me it's not worth saving $20 on eye safety. Has anyone else tested their filter with a simple flashlight trick?

The flashlight trick is a good reality check, kind of like how people trust cheap phone chargers until they smell burning plastic. It's the same principle with everything from bike locks to car tires - the cheap version usually cuts a corner you can't see until it's too late.

Except plenty of cheap bike locks have held up fine for years while expensive ones get picked in seconds. A basic cable lock will stop a casual thief just as well as a hundred dollar U-lock if you park in a decent spot. Cheap phone chargers either work or they don't, and most of them work fine until you drop them in water or something. You're basically saying expensive stuff is the only safe option, which just isn't true for most daily situations.
