Found a weird trick for handling loud movie theaters

I was at an AMC last month and the bass from the action movie was so bad I almost left. Now I bring those foam earplugs they sell at hardware stores and just wear them under my headphones for the really loud parts. Has anyone else tried layering ear protection like that?

Yeah I used to think double layering was dumb too honestly, I figured you'd just end up hearing nothing but muffled noise. But last month I tried those little foam plugs under my over-ear headphones at a Nolan film and it was actually way better than I expected. Still got the dialogue clear enough but the bass felt way less punishing on my ears.

I remember reading on some audiophile forum that double layering can actually mess with your frequency response in a weird way. They said it works but you lose a lot of clarity.
