Found out why my nephew covers his ears at birthday parties and it is not the noise level
My sister told me last week that her son's OT explained something called auditory overload, where the brain can't filter out background sounds so every noise hits at once. She said at his friend's party in March, the mix of 20 kids talking plus the happy birthday song plus a balloon popping was what did it, not just the volume. Does anyone here deal with sound sensitivity that works this way, where it is the layers of sound and not how loud it is?
Wait, a single balloon popping was part of it? That seems so small compared to 20 kids screaming but somehow it's the last straw that tips everything over. My brain just can't wrap around how one sharp sound on top of all the talking and singing would be the thing that breaks it.
