My nephew asked me why I line up his toy cars by color and size

He's five and we were playing yesterday. He just looked at me and said, 'Aunt Beth, do you do that because it makes your brain feel quiet?' I told him yes, it really does. He said his brain feels quiet when he hums his favorite song. That hit different because no adult has ever put it that way before. It made me think about how we explain our needs to kids versus other grown-ups. Has anyone else had a kid point out something obvious about your habits that just clicked?

Read an article once about how kids describe their inner world with these perfect, simple words adults lose. They talk about a "wobbly feeling" instead of anxiety, or a "noisy brain." Your nephew naming that "quiet brain" feeling is exactly it. We over explain to other adults to be taken seriously, but kids just get to the core of it. Makes me wonder why we complicate our own needs so much when the truth is that simple.

Wait, they used "wobbly feeling" for anxiety?
