My therapist told me to schedule downtime after every social event and I fought it for 3 months

She kept saying I needed 30 minutes of quiet after any hangout but I thought that was a waste of a day. Last week I finally tried it after a 2 hour coffee with a friend and I didn't feel like crawling out of my skin for once. Anyone else have a piece of advice they ignored forever until it actually clicked?

Sat in my car for fifteen minutes after a family dinner last month and it saved the whole evening.

Man I used to roll my eyes SO hard at people who did that. Thought it was rude or dramatic or whatever. But then after my sister in law's birthday get together back in March I sat in my car for like twenty minutes just scrolling through my phone and breathing. It completely turned my head around on the whole idea. Sometimes you just need a minute to decompress before you walk back into the house or drive home. That little break kept me from snapping at my wife over nothing and actually made the rest of the night decent.
