Remembering the time I had a total meltdown at a family reunion in Cincinnati

I was 15, the noise from 50 people in my aunt's backyard got so loud I just froze up and started crying, but my cousin quietly took me to the quiet garage for an hour until I could talk again, and that's when I first realized I needed to plan for sensory overload.

That garage escape sounds like a solid plan to me. My family reunions in Dayton were always loud, but I learned to bring headphones and claim a spot on the porch swing early. For me, it was less about planning ahead and more about finding quick fixes in the moment. I just don't have the patience to map out my exit strategy for every noisy event.

Quick fixes can become their own kind of plan, though.
