TIL my son's meltdown at Target was actually him trying to tell me something
Last Tuesday at the Target on 5th Ave he screamed for 20 minutes by the lights aisle and I finally realized after 3 years of fighting him that he wasn't being difficult, he was overwhelmed by the buzzing fluorescents, so I asked him to point at what was wrong and he tapped the ceiling, has anyone else had a kid who communicates better once you stop assuming it's a behavior thing?

The buzzing light thing is so real. My daughter used to lose it in hardware stores specifically, and I thought she just hated being dragged along. Turns out the overhead fluorescents in those places have a hum that's way stronger than regular stores, plus they flicker in a way that's almost invisible but you can feel it in your eyes. Once I clocked that she was pointing at the ceiling panels, I started bringing those cheap ear defenders from the paint section and letting her wear them. Night and day difference. Even now at 7 she'll tell me "the lights are loud" and I know exactly what she means, it's like they're shouting at her brain. It makes me wonder how many other kids are getting labeled as bad when they're just trying to survive a sensory assault, you know?
