TIL the school called a "quiet room" a reward, and my nephew came home calm for the first time in weeks
My nephew Ben is 8 and in 2nd grade, and school has been rough since September. He was getting sent to the office maybe 3 times a week for stuff like humming during reading time or leaving his seat, and by Friday he'd come home and just lay on the floor. Two weeks ago his mom asked for a meeting and the special ed teacher set up something called a sensory break room. It's small, has a beanbag, some putty, and those noise blocking headphones. Now when Ben feels like his body is going too fast, he can ask for a 10 minute pass and go there instead of getting in trouble. He's gone 9 school days without an office visit, which has never happened since kindergarten. What got me is that they were treating the stuff he did as bad behavior when really he just needed a break from all the noise. His teacher said he even started finishing his math sheets in there. Has anyone here had a school actually work with them like this instead of just writing kids up?
Watched a buddy's kid go from daily write ups to zero once they figured out he just needed to move his body. The principal told him it was coddling at first, then the test scores went up and she got quiet.
