$60 for a magnetic drain plug was stupid until I cut open my oil filter

Found four chunks of bearing material stuck to that magnet after 5,000 miles on my 2002 Miata, so I guess the $60 paid for itself, has anyone else gotten actual proof from one of these things?

Oh wow, my buddy's engine went toast because he skipped it.

Yeah honestly that's one of those things people think they can just skip thinking it's a waste of money. But that little pump keeps the oil pressure steady at startup when everything's dry. If it fails and you lose prime the bearings can get scored in like 10 seconds flat. A friend of mine had to drop 3 grand on a rebuild because his oil pump pickup tube o-ring went bad and the pump couldn't pull oil.
