My neighbor in Tucson told me my tires were fine at 4/32nds, and I've been mad about it for 6 months
He's been working on cars since the 80s and swears anything above the wear bars is good for another year, but I hydroplaned on I-10 in the rain and that was that. Tread depth is not a suggestion, it's the whole point, and I don't care how many years he's been turning wrenches. Anyone else got a guy in their life whose advice sounds solid until it nearly puts you in a ditch?
Man 4/32nds is already pushing it even in dry weather, and nobody should be telling you otherwise. I had a shop guy pull the same thing on me years back, said my tires were "good till summer" when they were barely above the bars, and I slid through a stop sign two weeks later on wet pavement. The wear bars are at 2/32nds, that's the legal limit, not a target you aim for. Once you're under 6/32nds in the rain you're losing grip fast, and hydroplaning on the highway is how people die. Your neighbor might know how to swap a starter but that doesn't mean he knows tire safety, those are two different things.
