Took me 15 years of owning a stick shift to realize I was resting my hand on the shifter the whole time
A buddy in Austin riding shotgun called me out on it after we hit a rough patch of highway and he saw my hand bobbing on the stick, and then I looked up that it wears out the synchros, so how many others out there learned this one the hard way?

That "constant pressure on the synchro rings" thing you mentioned (@grant728) is exactly what my buddy told me too. Cost me a transmission rebuild on an old Sentra before I finally broke the habit.

Yeah that "hand on the shifter" thing got me too... I caught myself doing it for years until a mechanic buddy told me it puts constant pressure on the synchro rings and wears them out faster. Ended up having to replace my second gear synchro at 80k miles on my old Civic, which was a pricey lesson for sure. Now I keep both hands on the wheel unless I'm actually shifting, and it's saved me a bunch of headache long term.
