Air hammer bits are NOT universal, learned that the hard way yesterday

I spent 3 hours fighting a rusted tie rod end in my F-150 because I grabbed a cheap bit set from Harbor Freight and assumed it would fit my Ingersoll Rand. The shank was slightly undersized, so it rattled like crazy and barely transferred any impact. Swapped to a proper Snap-on bit and the thing popped loose in under 2 minutes. I've been turning wrenches for 12 years in Dallas and I genuinely thought a chisel bit was a chisel bit. Anyone else ever waste a whole afternoon on a tool mismatch that should've been obvious? What's your worst fitment fail?

Wait, you really thought all air hammer bits were built to the same tolerance? I've been in the game about as long as you and I still check the shank diameter on anything that ain't factory. The cheap sets are always the trap, they look fine in the package but they got that sloppy play once you get them in the retainer. I had a similar thing with a cut-off wheel arbor, thought a 5/8 one would fit a 7/8 spindle because the thread looked close enough. Spent an hour grinding nothing but the guard before I realized it was cocked sideways. Why do we always learn the expensive lesson twice before we start measuring things? Good on you for getting it sorted, but you already know this town has no room for cheap bits.
