Old timer told me my brake line flares were 'pretty but useless'

I spent like 3 years doing double flares on brake lines thinking I was hot stuff. Then this guy Dave at a shop in Phoenix looked at my work and said they look nice but they'll leak under pressure. He was right. I had been using the wrong die on my flaring tool for years and never knew. Soon as I switched to the right size and started doing bubble flares for metric stuff my leaks dropped to almost zero. It was humbling as hell. Any of you guys had some old head just wreck your confidence with a simple fix like that?

His flares probably leak too, just with WORSE looking ones.
