Pro tip: a $14 hose clamp saved me from dropping a subframe in a customer's driveway
Was doing a Honda control arm job in a driveway in Tacoma last month and the subframe started to drop a half inch more than it should have while I was prying on it. Turned out the rusted pinch weld on my jack stand was slipping in the rain and I had nothing to back it up. I grabbed a $14 hose clamp out of my cup holder, wrapped it around the stand's lock bar and the post, and it held solid for the next 40 minutes. Got the arm swapped and the car back on the ground, no bent fingers and no dropped cradle. I keep three clamps in my road bag now because that was the second close call this season. Anyone got a better trick for keeping stands from creeping on wet concrete? I'm all ears.
Hose clamp on a jack stand is sketchy as hell but I respect the quick thinking. Wet concrete is the devil for creeping stands, cardboard or a scrap of plywood under the base helps a bit.
