Rant: everyone says you need a smoke machine but a $3 cigar saved my diagnosis
Had a 2007 Civic come in with a evap code and a rough idle that no one could pin down for 2 weeks at my shop in Boise. Everyone on the forums swore I needed a $900 smoke machine, but I grabbed a cheap gas station cigar, blew smoke into the intake hose, and watched it curl out of a cracked vacuum line near the firewall in about 90 seconds. Found the leak, charged the guy $40 for diag, and he drove off happy the same afternoon. I keep a pack in my toolbox now and it has caught 4 more vacuum leaks since March. Anyone else using old school tricks instead of dropping grand on tools, or am I just cheap?
Guessing the $900 smoke machine guys are real mad you just solved their business model with a Swisher Sweet. Old school tricks like that are why the dudes who have been turning wrenches for 30 years still run circles around kids with fancy scanners. Keep that pack in the toolbox, it is earning its keep better than any tool truck credit card ever did.
