That master tech at my shop in Phoenix told me I was using too much torque on oil drain plugs and I've been chasing stripped pans for 5 years

He said hand tight is enough once the gasket seats, so I tried it on a 2015 F-150 last week and the filter gasket didn't even leak, has anyone else been overtightening stuff without realizing it?

Read a thread on some diesel forum where a guy tested this with a torque wrench. He found most aluminum pans start deforming around 25 ft-lbs. Factory spec on my 4Runner is 18 ft-lbs. Been doing it by feel for years, probably way over that. Switched to a torque wrench last month, no leaks and the threads actually look clean now.

A buddy of mine with a 2015 Tacoma did the same thing after stripping out his oil pan drain plug on a camping trip. He was tightening it with just a ratchet and a prayer, but he's been using a torque wrench set to 18 ft-lbs since then and the pans held up fine. So yeah, @elliotr39 is right about that spec being solid, and I'm glad someone actually tested it instead of just guessing.
