Chatted with a retired A&P at the Oshkosh airshow about troubleshooting
He told me 'the manual gives you the path, but your meter tells you the story,' and it clicked that I was following steps without really reading the data. Anyone else have a simple rule that changed how you approach a fault?

Yeah "the meter tells you the story" is a great line. I read a similar idea about not just chasing the diagnostic tree but actually looking at what the numbers MEAN. It forces you to understand the system instead of just following steps. That shift in thinking makes a huge difference.

My buddy learned that the hard way fixing his truck.

That idea about understanding the system is good, but sometimes you just need the steps to get the job done. Not everyone has time to become an expert on every system they touch. A good diagnostic tree can save you a ton of time when you're stuck.
