Found out the ADS-B mandate deadline was Jan 1 2020 and we still get planes in needing the upgrade
Was reading through an old FAA advisory circular at the shop in Wichita and saw that the ADS-B Out mandate hit January 1, 2020, which is over 5 years back now. I figured every bird that flies commercially would have it by now, but we got a 1978 Cessna 172 in two weeks ago that still had the old transponder and no ADS-B at all. Owner said nobody flagged it on his last annual, which blows my mind since he flies into Class B airspace weekly. How are you guys handling these stragglers, do you push for the full install or just document it and let the owner deal with the FAA?
That "nobody flagged it on his last annual" part is the real story here. I see the same thing with state inspections on cars, some shops just pencil whip it and move on because they don't want the fight. The owner isn't lying either, he really didn't know, which tells you how thin the oversight gets on stuff that's been required for years. For a 172 going into Class B every week, I'd tell him straight up what he's risking and put it in writing either way, because if he busts that airspace the paper trail matters.
