Got roasted by a thru-hiker for my bear bag setup on the Appalachian Trail
Last summer on a section hike in Virginia, this older guy with a tramly beard watched me struggle with my bear bag line for 5 minutes before he finally said 'you're gonna feed a bear with that knot work.' He showed me the PCT method where you tie a rock to the line and toss it over a branch, and now I can get my bag up in under 2 minutes. Has anyone else gotten a piece of advice from a stranger that completely changed their camp routine?

Gotta respectfully disagree though. I've been doing the simple stick method for years and never had issues. A rock can slip right out mid toss and then you're chasing it down the mountain.

Oh wow, nothing like a game of "chase the runaway rock" to spice up your hike! Guess I'll add "mid-toss rock jailbreak" to my list of outdoor skills to master. At least you get a good cardio workout either way, right?
