Had to pick between the standard High Sierra Trail or a longer loop last August

The choice was the classic 72 mile High Sierra Trail from Crescent Meadow to Whitney Portal, or a 90 mile loop starting at Mineral King that added the Sawtooth Pass. I went with the longer loop for more solitude. Big mistake. The Sawtooth Pass route was way steeper and the scree was awful, adding a full extra day of tough travel we didn't plan for. We ran low on food by day 6 and had to ration. Has anyone else taken that Mineral King loop and found a better way to manage the time?

Sounds like a rough trip but maybe you just packed too light.

Totally get what you mean, jaderamirez. I just started making a list of the stuff I actually used on my last trip, not what I thought I'd need. Helps a ton for next time.

That "packed too light" idea is everywhere, like blaming a bad day on not having the right planner. It's just easier to focus on the small stuff you can control instead of the bigger mess. We do it with everything, not just trips.
