How learning to read a map saved my butt in the wilderness

I see a lot of folks using GPS for everything, but I think that's asking for trouble. I picked up map and compass skills years ago, and it's paid off big time. For example, last fall in the Sierra Nevadas, my phone's battery died halfway through. With my paper map, I could still find my route and even spot a shortcut. It forces you to really look at the land, not just follow a line on a screen. Plus, you never have to worry about signal or updates, lol.

Always figured the cold battery thing was overblown until my phone shut off during a ski trip. It was fully charged but just died in my pocket after an hour outside. Now I keep a power bank in my coat when it's freezing.
