Last trip, I got lost between two trail markers and had to rethink my route planning.
I used to only follow marked trails, but after getting lost, I switched to using a map and compass. Now I see both sides: marked trails are safer, but going off-trail feels more adventurous. How do you all decide?

A backpacking blog mentioned off-trail routes often lead to hidden spots, do you agree?

Absolutely, but it's tricky... And from my own trips, going off trail can show you secret lakes or quiet spots no one else knows. But you have to be honest about your skills and how prepared you are. I got totally lost once because I didn't check my map enough, and it was scary. Now I only try it if the weather's good and I have a clear way back. The hidden places are amazing, but they come with real risks.

Saw my friend attempt an unmarked route once. He thought it would save time but ended up in a thick bush for hours. Honestly, it was a mess, but he did stumble upon a small waterfall nobody knew about. Now he mixes both methods, planning with a map but sticking near markers when tired. Tbh, it comes down to your comfort level and how much adventure you want.
