Muir Trail or JMT segment, I picked the shorter loop and saved my knees
Last summer I planned 10 days on the John Muir Trail but my buddy convinced me to do a 60 mile loop near Rae Lakes instead. I was worried about missing the classic trail, but we saw way fewer people and the fishing was insane. My knees felt fine the whole way, while my other friend who did the full JMT came back limping. Has anyone else swapped a famous route for a less known loop and ended up happier?
Oh man yes. I did almost the same thing two summers ago, bailed on the JMT and did a loop out of Onion Valley instead. Saw like 4 people in 5 days and caught golden trout until my arm got tired. My buddy did the full trail and said it was a traffic jam the whole way, plus he lost a toenail. Honestly the famous routes are famous for a reason but the crowds and the wear on your body just aren't worth it sometimes. Give me the quiet loop any day.
