My dad told me to always carry a physical map on the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail, even with GPS. I thought he was being old-school until my phone died in a canyon near Big Basin.

Pack a map and a power bank, trust me I learned the hard way too.

Your dad had the right idea. GPS fails but paper doesn't run out of batteries. A map is just smarter backup for real wilderness.

Used to rely on my phone too but that totally changed my mind.
