Shoutout to the ranger in Lone Pine who told me to skip Kearsarge Pass in July
I told her my plan was to push over Kearsarge Pass on day 3 of a 6 day loop out of Onion Valley and she said flat out 'you'll hit rotten snow on the north side and posthole for hours, take the trail up Bubbs Creek instead.' I ignored her for about 2 miles the next morning, turned around at the first slushy switchback, and ended up doing her route, which was dry the whole way and got me to the hot springs a full day early. Has anyone else had a ranger talk them out of a pass and been glad they listened?
Kearsarge in July of 2019 is what did it for me, I was that guy who thought rangers were just covering their butts with the caution talk. Spent three hours postholing up to my thighs on the north side and ate my lunch sitting on a rock feeling like a total idiot. Now if a ranger gives me beta on snow I just say yes sir and change my whole plan. She saved you a day AND a bad ankle, that trade is always worth it.
