That guy who told me to skip water filters on the JMT was dead wrong
Met a thru-hiker at a gear shop in Bishop who swore he did the whole John Muir Trail without a filter, just treated with iodine drops. By day 3 I had giardia symptoms so bad I had to bail at Tuolumne Meadows. Anyone else run into bad advice from people who got lucky?

Man that's just like people who think skipping oil changes is fine because their buddy's truck made it to 200k.

Admitted it to myself after my first season - used to think a quick soak with bleach was fine cause some old timer told me it killed everything. Then I got wrecked by crypto from a supposedly pristine alpine lake and spent three days in my tent regretting every shortcut. Now I carry a squeeze filter and treat with aquamira as backup, never risking that gamble again.
