That one time in the Sierra Nevada where a perfect route turned into a total washout

I had this 5 day loop planned in the John Muir Wilderness, and the first two days were amazing, clear skies and easy miles. Then on day three, a freak thunderstorm rolled in over Pinchot Pass and dumped rain for 18 straight hours, turning the trail into a cold, slick river. My tent leaked, my boots were soaked through, and we had to bail early by cutting down a sketchy, unmarked drainage just to get out. It wasn't the gear or the planning that failed, it was just pure, bad luck with the weather. Anyone else have a dream trip completely wrecked by one single day of awful conditions?

Man, that sounds rough. I always pack a small tarp now to rig over my tent in a downpour. It saved my butt on a trip in the Smokies last fall. Sometimes you just need that one extra piece of simple gear.

Yeah it's like that with a lot of things, not just hiking. You can do everything right and still get wrecked by one random bad day. Makes you wonder why we even bother planning sometimes.
